Declutter your Marketing Plan

What my kitchen counter taught me about business marketing

We all have them sometimes, cluttered spaces that we no longer ‘see’. This morning it was my kitchen counter.

I admit it, I am great at organizing others in terms of marketing and business practices, but sometimes, like the shoemaker’s shoes, my own space lives in disarray. This morning, I took the time to properly clean and sanitize my kitchen counter. Of course, that meant moving all the ‘stuff’ off it first. And as I put it back, I actually put it AWAY.

routineAs I stand here looking at my re-organized kitchen, I realize how pretty and big it actually is, and I also realize that for several weeks the coffee tin has sat on the counter, as well as the jar of peanut butter and a pile of papers “to be sorted”. They had been there so long, that I stopped seeing them. Only when they are gone, do I realize how much space I have cleared and how much better I feel about the room.

Is your marketing like my kitchen counter?  Are you doing the same stuff over and over and not really seeing it any longer?

So often what we see as a routine, is actually a rut.

We are in the habit of writing our newsletters, doing social media, and blogging for example, that we don’t stop and think. Is this the best use of my time?

Are my ideal clients paying attention?  Am I attracting new clients?  We simply go on doing what we have always done, without pausing to measure the effectiveness of what we do.  By simply pausing, evaluating, and tweaking – we can get improve our marketing plan.

Pause.  Evaluate.  Tweak as necessary.

Think about it, when is the last time you looked at your marketing plan?  Do you even have one?  How will you know if you are on track without one? A marketing plan can become as cluttered as my kitchen counter if it is not revisited on a continual basis.
