Go Big or Go Home… Really??
Ok, this blog is usually all about marketing and branding – but today I am sharing some life lessons.
For years I have heard from the coaching and marketing ‘bigwigs’ that if you are not making huge dollars, if you are not a superstar you are not successful. One person in particular live coached someone at a recent conference and told them point blank that if they were not making 10K+ every month they were not successful and needed to “shut up and listen to her”.
Really?? Who was she to define that person’s success? Success has so many definitions – and you have every right to figure out what success looks like to you.
Here is what I see. Many of us have bought into the ‘bigger, better, newer’ ideas for a long time. We spend all our time chasing the dream, instead of living our lives – and living our dreams. We think we have to be a superstar. We think we all need to make 20K plus per talk, that we need to have a best selling book, that we need to have our name in lights. Truth is – most of us won’t reach that mark. Most of us are ‘average Joes – that is why it is called average. It is the middle level. If we were all in the top 10% as defined by that coach – then THAT would be the new middle.
There is nothing wrong with reaching for the top though. But here’s the catch – YOU define the top.
Once you decide what you really want, and stop trying to keep up with what everyone else has, you can finally be happy where you are AND you can blaze your own trail to the top of your own personal mountain. Your definition might include fame and riches. Diamonds might BE your best friend, but make that choice yourself.
So yes, go big or go home – but go big for what YOU want, and stop letting others define you.
